Alumnus Bradley King ’13 to travel to Dubai with Shurtape Technologies, LLC

December 18, 2014

Bradley King ’13, who graduated with a degree in Business Administration and a concentration in accounting, has quickly climbed the ranks at Shurtape Technologies, LLC. In just one year, he has moved from cost accounting intern to cost analyst, and now he will begin his biggest move yet with routine travel to Dubai.

“I recently started to work directly with the CFO of Shurtape analyzing and keeping an eye on the financial position of our Dubai entity,” said King. “In several months I will be solely responsible for auditing and overseeing Dubai’s monthly financial statements and weekly sales report. I will be responsible for visiting Dubai one time per year starting in early 2015.”

According to the company website, Shurtape Technologies, LLC, a privately owned company with a corporate headquarters in Hickory, N.C., serves a variety of markets from painting and packaging to HVAC and transportation. The company features locations in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Germany, Dubai and China.

In addition to his focus on the Dubai entity, King’s other responsibilities as a cost analyst include creating and distributing weekly variance reports to upper management, completing numerous budgeting assignments, and creating an ABC Analysis which shows cost impact vs. manufactured volume. Shurtape has also given King the opportunity to attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to pursue his master of accounting.

“[Lees-McRae] professors stressed the importance of a professional reputation by continually motivating students to uphold the highest expectations,” said King. “I credit much of my success today to one particular discussion held with Professor John LaCapra surrounding the topics of confidence, persistence, and professionalism during an interview. I know my response to a rather typical interview question landed me my internship with Shurtape.”

After moving into his current position as cost analyst, King was given the chance to join the Cost Accuracy Team where he works directly with executives and upper management to analyze the accuracy of current cost with a vision to eliminate waste and ultimately help Shurtape transition into a Lean Manufacturer. As part of this team, King has been a part of presentations given to the CFO and Vice Presidents, which led to an opportunity to be involved in strategic planning discussions.

“My professors taught me more than how to analyze financial statements and market a new product, they taught me how to succeed,” said King. “I graduated Lees-McRae with a valuable set of personal skills I couldn’t have gained at a large university.”
