Assistant Professor Jesse Knight creates music video for North Carolina jam band BIG Something

November 25, 2014

After earning a string of awards for his feature-length and episodic films, Jesse Knight, assistant professor of Communication Arts and Design at Lees-McRae, has created another filmmaking masterpiece, this time in the form of a music video for the North Carolina jam band BIG Something. The video was for “Megalodon” a song off the band’s latest album Truth Serum which was released earlier this month.

In an article featured in Guitar World, BIG Something's Nick MacDaniels said, "We recorded Truth Serum almost entirely live in the studio in order to get the best of both worlds, the energy from playing together live and the polish of the recording studio environment. This video was created in the spirit of that concept, combining studio footage from the recording of 'Megalodon' and concert footage from the Big What?, our annual summer music festival [in Mebane, N.C.]."

Relix magazine has hailed BIG Something’s sound as “an expertly-played, eclectic mix of rock, funk, jazz, reggae and more ... One listen brings on an urgent desire to see this tremendous six-piece tear it up live.”

Knight began working with the band several years ago when he filmed their Apocalypse show held on December 21, 2012. He continued on to film their first official music video for the song “Illuminated” from their 2013 self-titled studio album which won three Album of the Year awards.

“I love working with these extremely talented musicians and I am honored they wanted me to make another video for them,” said Knight.

In recent years, Knight’s film work has progressively received more acclaim. His feature film The Orbs has won five awards and counting in the festival circuit. The first two episodes of the series Partners, which Knight is directing and editing, was accepted into Sun and Sand: The Mississippi Film & Music Festival where it was screened this past October. Additionally, at the 2012 ConCarolina Film Festival, Knight took home the Lucid Auteur Award for his short film Guns, Water & Food: An American Story.

Knight earned his BFA from The University of North Carolina at Asheville and, subsequently, his MFA from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In the classroom, Knight, who has been a member of the Lees-McRae faculty since 2008, teaches many classes in the Communication Arts & Design program such as Multimedia Presentations and Video Production. Outside of the classroom, Knight owns and operates Jesse Knight Films which has created numerous short films, music videos and made-for-TV series.
