Lees-McRae College names Brent Thomas ‘85 as Vice President of Advancement

Lees-McRae College is pleased to announce the appointment of Brent Thomas ’85 as Vice President of Advancement. Thomas most recently served as the Director of Development at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina. He will begin his duties at Lees-McRae College on April 1, 2015.

As a Lees-McRae College alumnus of the class of 1985, Thomas brings an innate understanding of the College as well as over twenty-five years of experience as a fundraising professional with fifteen years of experience in university administration and thirteen years of experience in specialized health care settings. His past professional appointments include leadership roles at the United Way of Central Carolinas, Appalachian State University, University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Emory University, Washington Cancer Institute at Washington Hospital Center, Children’s National Medical Center and most recently, Western Carolina University. 

In addition to earning an Associate of Arts from Lees-McRae College, Thomas earned two degrees from Appalachian State University, a Bachelor of Science in Communication Arts with a concentration in public relations and marketing and a Master of Science in Leadership and Higher Education with a concentration in administration. 

"It is a privilege and honor to return home to Lees-McRae College and promote education at this fine institution,” said Thomas.

Beginning April 1, 2015, he will work closely with the president, administration, faculty and staff to provide leadership and service to advance the financial growth and stability of the College. In addition to establishing development strategies, Thomas will oversee the daily operations of the Office of Advancement, implementation of fundraising and marketing strategies, as well as management of prospect, donor, alumni and family relations.

In many capacities as a development professional, Thomas has been successful in raising funds for higher education institutions and health care organizations. Prior accomplishments include managing multi-million dollar institution-wide fundraising campaigns; exceeding established revenue goals; achieving membership, volunteer and prospect outreach goals; and developing effective partnerships and advisory boards. A testament to his outstanding career performance, Thomas has been referred to as the “best relationship-builder in the business” by his former leader at the Children’s National Medical Center. 

“Lees-McRae is so proud to welcome Brent back home,” said President Barry M. Buxton ’11H. “The College will certainly benefit from his love for his alma mater and years of experience as a seasoned development professional.”
