Lees-McRae welcomes Dr. Conrad Ostwalt, Professor of Religious Studies at Appalachian State University, as the spring 2016 Staley Distinguished Lecturer. • The Evolution of God:  Relational Theology and an Emergent God on February 18

“We are thrilled to offer the Staley lectures this February,” said Associate Professor of Religion Michael Vines.  “As a preeminent scholar in the field, Dr. Ostwalt brings his thoughtful analysis of the current state of Christianity in America to Lees-McRae. We invite students, faculty, staff and the community to enjoy the series.”

Dr. Conrad (Ozzie) Ostwalt has served in Appalachian State’s Religious Studies department since 1988.  His teaching areas include religion in America, religion and culture, religion and film and religion and literature. In addition to teaching, he has published dozens of scholarly articles and five books, the most recent an expanded and revised 2nd edition of Secular Steeples:  Popular Culture and the Religious Imagination

The Staley Distinguished Christian Scholar Series is a project of the Thomas F. Staley Foundation. Mr. and Mrs. Staley of Rye, New York established the Lectureship in the fall of 1969 in memory of their parents, Dr. and Mrs. Thomas F. Staley and Judge and Mrs. H.H. Haynes, to promote the Christian message among students at small, church-related colleges. The Foundation seeks to bring distinguished scholars and artists who truly believe, and can clearly communicate the Christian gospel, to college and university campuses across America.
