College celebrates 58th Honors and Awards

April 24, 2017

Students, faculty and staff gathered Thursday, April 20, in Evans Auditorium to celebrate the recipients of several coveted awards as part of the traditional Honors and Awards event.

The afternoon began with a performance of Brice Williams’ “I Was Here” from the college’s choral ensemble, The Highlanders, comprised of Director Holly Hendricks and students Kelsey Martin, Breanna Jackson, Taylor Noll and Alice Gomez, before moving into awards.

Though 24 awards in total were given– some to multiple students or faculty–a few of the most notable awards included the Mary Mildred Sullivan Award, the Edgar Tufts Faculty Award and the Edgar Tufts Humanitarian Service Award.

One new award was added to the list: the Faculty Academic Advisor Award.

Student, Jordan Mayer, received the Mary Mildred Sullivan Award. The award, supported by the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation, is given to a graduating senior, alumnus or community member whose “nobility of character” and service to others sets them apart as example to all.

Director of the Burton Center for Student Success, Keri Magaña, was awarded with the Edgar Tufts Faculty Award.

In memory of Lees-McRae founder Rev. Edgar Tufts, the award is presented to a faculty member for outstanding professional performance or contributions to the welfare of the college or community.

Both student, Hannah Hoots, and Director of Advancement Services, Frankie Needham, received the Edgar Tufts Humanitarian Service Award.

The award is given to one student and one employee of Lees-McRae who best exemplifies a life of service in both the community and on campus. Recipients unselfishly give of their time and talents, show a true openness and concern for others and display a life of giving.

Learning Specialist within the Burton Center for Student Success, Sue McGuire, received the newly created Faculty Academic Advisor Award.

The Faculty Academic Advisor Award is presented to a faculty academic advisor who delivers reliable, consistent and comprehensive advising to students. The advisor is available and accessible to students, demonstrates excellent advising skills and engages in advising practices that are inclusive of academic programs, core curriculum, registration, career education and personal assistance to students.

Assistant Professor of Biology and Assistant Dean of Natural and Behavioral Sciences, Sean Collins, received the New Faculty Award– an award added to the roster during the 57th Awards and Honors event.

The award is presented to a faculty member who has been employed at Lees-McRae for one to three years and has excelled in teaching, advising, scholarship and service.

The Highlanders rounded off the event with a performance of Greg Gilpin’s “Reaching Higher and Higher.”
