As part of the Performing Arts curriculum, Lees-McRae students visited three local elementary schools to perform Alice in Wonderland. On Thursday, April 10, Katelyn Dancy, Katie Gesell, Destini Fleming, Adrienne Reece and Schuyler Carson performed two shows at Newland Elementary School for kindergarten through fifth grade children. Then on Tuesday, April 15, Laren Evans, Holly Knowles, Anna Ashburn, Chloe Boggs and Randi Sowards performed shows at Banner Elk Elementary School for pre-kindergarten through third grade children and Crossnore Elementary School for kindergarten through third grade children.

Lees-McRae College will hold its annual commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 10 at 11 a.m. on Tate Lawn. As the culmination of the academic year, commencement is a special time for students, faculty, staff, families and the community to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduates. Lees-McRae College Board of Trustees member and former chairman, Thomas H. Brigham, Jr. ’72, has been chosen as the 2014 Commencement speaker along with former Board of Trustees chairman, Jane B. Stephenson ’57. Mr. Brigham will present his keynote address titled “Pursuing your passion and living life for significance,” and then Ms. Stephenson will present her address titled “Leap into life and make a difference.”

Lees-McRae senior Tyler Dunn has been named the Conference Carolinas Men’s Indoor Track & Field Winter Scholar Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced Monday morning.

Lees-McRae is proud to announce they have signed cooperative agreements with four Chinese institutions. Though still in their infancy, these relationships hold many possibilities for the expansion of Lees-McRae’s global education programs.

On Thursday, April 10, Lees-McRae rolled up its sleeves and celebrated its 10th annual Mountain Day of Service. The day began with a kick-off in Evans Auditorium where participants received T-shirts and supplies. Throughout the day, groups spent time throughout campus working on projects such as painting, planting flowers, collecting recycling and giving the campus a good spring cleaning.

Lees-McRae College is proud to announce that incoming freshman, Sam Pugh, has been named the winner of the 2nd annual Video Essay Scholarship Contest. As the winner, Pugh will receive a $2,000 annual scholarship that is renewable for up to four years as long as he maintains a 2.5 cumulative GPA.

Since Old Man Winter refuses to accept his exit, Lees-McRae College will usher him off the stage with its celebration of the Fourth Annual Appalachian Heritage Week April 7 through 11. Each day the College will celebrate a particular aspect of mountain heritage and invite everyone to participate in activities sponsored by the Stephenson Center for Appalachia.

The New Opportunity School for Women (NOSW) at Lees-McRae College is accepting applications for its three-week residential summer program that helps low-income women gain the skills and confidence to turn their lives around. This summer’s session will be held from July 6-26.

Rita Smith, chair of the division of nursing and allied health, was featured in the National Athletic Trainers’ Association News Magazine in the January edition. Smith has been at Lees-McRae since 1983, where she started as an athletic trainer, assistant basketball and assistant tennis coach.

John Hinnant ’93, one of the newest members of the Alumni Board, will tell you that Lees-McRae College taught him to truly love learning. “I’m on my 4th professional career. I have never feared career change as I know I am capable of doing anything if there is a way to learn how. Lees-McRae was constantly teaching us how to love learning. I still read and I still enjoy a learning environment even though it’s not a classroom environment.”

Lander University’s Alumni Association has selected Jon Driggers, ’98, of Banner Elk, N.C., as the recipient of its Young Alumni Award. Driggers was an exercise science major from Aiken, a resident assistant, SGA senator, peer educator and recipient of the Lander University President’s Award. He has served as dean of students at Coker College and South University in Columbia, and held positions at Clemson University and Erskine College. He is now dean of students at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C.

On Friday, March 21, Lees-McRae will host an opening reception for artist Robert Tynes, whose exhibit of contemporary Trompe L’Oeil paintings will be on display from March 14 through April 11 in the King-Shivell Gallery at the College. This exhibit is free and open to the public.

Tusculum coach Richard Carrington and Lees-McRae coach Darry Thornton will stride toward each other and shake hands, establishing the contest as the first-ever between two black head coaches at the Division II level, and just the second known meeting in NCAA men's lacrosse history.

The Lees-McRae Performing Arts Department is proud to present Mystery of Edwin Drood, a murder-mystery in which the audience chooses the culprit! The production will premiere in Hayes Auditorium on the campus of Lees-McRae College on Thursday, February 27 at 7:30 p.m. and run through March 2. All performances are open to the public.

With winter weather in full force, head down to King-Shivell Gallery on the campus of Lees-McRae College to enjoy works by artist Dianne Cable. This exhibit will be on display throughout the month of February. The pieces are mostly assemblage, which is artwork that is made of found objects and can be three dimensional or two dimensional. The gallery will also feature an ongoing slide show of other works by Cable throughout her artistic career. This exhibit is free and open to the public.

Looking for something to do on Valentine’s Day? Come out to Lees-McRae for The Vagina Monologues! On Friday, February 14, Lees-McRae will host The Vagina Monologues at 7 p.m. in Evans Auditorium in the Cannon Student Center. This performance contains mature subject matter and is open to the public. Donations of at least one dollar are required and proceeds will benefit OASIS of Avery County. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

On Monday, January 13, six members of the Lees-McRae Enactus Team, along with Enactus advisor Amy Taylor and faculty member Joe Walsh, traveled to S & D Coffee in Concord, North Carolina. The day included a tour of the facilities as well as a presentation on the production and development of its products.

In December 2013, AffordableCollegesOnline.org analyzed online degree programs from more than 2,000 accredited colleges and universities across the nation. Lees-McRae ranked no. 6 out of 30 for affordability in North Carolina with a list including top institutions such as Duke University, East Carolina University, Campbell University and many others.

Beat the winter blues by coming out to enjoy the Stephenson Center for Appalachia’s Lecture Series at Lees-McRae College. The lectures begin on Thursday, January 30 at 7:00 p.m. in Evans Auditorium with an illustrated talk by Dr. Scott Huffard, "The 1891 Wreck at Bostian’s Bridge and the Haunted History of the Western North Carolina Railroad," and run through the middle of April. A variety of programs, scholars, poets, novelists and natural historians will pour the light of their work onto the gloom of winter. All Stephenson Center lectures are free and open to the public.

The Lees-McRae cycling team finished third in the Division I Collegiate Cyclocross National Championship, while tallying 192 points. Senior Kerry Werner claimed his second consecutive individual title over the weekend on the men's side in Boulder, Colo.

Becky Alghrary-McRee ’63, former Banner Elk Resident and Lees-McRae alumna, will hold a book signing for her new book, From the Catawba to the Tigris at Lees-McRae College on Friday, Jan. 17. The book, McRee’s fifth, recounts her many unforgettable adventures in the years she spent traveling to and from, and living in Iraq in the 1970s and 80s.

Kerry Werner (Banner Elk, N.C./Lees-McRae College) successfully defending his title as the Division I men's national champion after he completed his six-lap race in 47:26. Werner, who won this national title for third time today, turned five of his six laps in under eight minutes.

In January 2014, Lees-McRae College named Chris Parker as Director of Sports Information. Parker was most recently the Assistant Sports Information Director at Brevard College, a member of the South Atlantic Conference and a fellow NCAA Division II institution.
