With winter weather in full force, head down to King-Shivell Gallery on the campus of Lees-McRae College to enjoy works by artist Dianne Cable. This exhibit will be on display throughout the month of February. The pieces are mostly assemblage, which is artwork that is made of found objects and can be three dimensional or two dimensional. The gallery will also feature an ongoing slide show of other works by Cable throughout her artistic career. This exhibit is free and open to the public.

In December 2013, AffordableCollegesOnline.org analyzed online degree programs from more than 2,000 accredited colleges and universities across the nation. Lees-McRae ranked no. 6 out of 30 for affordability in North Carolina with a list including top institutions such as Duke University, East Carolina University, Campbell University and many others.

Kerry Werner (Banner Elk, N.C./Lees-McRae College) successfully defending his title as the Division I men's national champion after he completed his six-lap race in 47:26. Werner, who won this national title for third time today, turned five of his six laps in under eight minutes.

In January 2014, Lees-McRae College named Chris Parker as Director of Sports Information. Parker was most recently the Assistant Sports Information Director at Brevard College, a member of the South Atlantic Conference and a fellow NCAA Division II institution.

On December 9, The College Database released its list of top colleges in the state for teacher education. Titled "Top Colleges in North Carolina: Shaping the Next Generation," the list highlighted post-secondary institutions in the state that produced the most education graduates during the 2012 school year. Lees-McRae was ranked no. 26 out of 42 schools that made the list.

In December 2013, Lees-McRae College named Boderick “Bo” Bennett as Vice President of Extended Campus and Online Learning. Bennett was most recently the program coordinator for Human Services at Lees-McRae as well as an adjunct professor for the criminal justice program. He will begin his duties on January 6, 2014.

Lees-McRae College has been awarded the annual Alan Sharp Award for Conference Carolinas, marking the first time in the school’s history. For the 2011-12 academic year 93% of scholarship athletes graduated within six years of coming onto the Lees-McRae campus.

Three decades of tuition increases that have far outpaced inflation and a recession that left graduates with few job prospects have made college a daunting decision. But changing demographics, price-sensitive buyers and the specter of vacant dorm rooms appear to be curbing the upward spiral of the cost of a college degree.

On Monday, November 4, Lees-McRae College appointed Dr. Laura Fero as Director of Nursing. Dr. Fero, who most recently was the national curriculum and instruction specialist for Chamberlain College of Nursing, will begin full-time duties on November 14.

IN 2009, Tufts and George Mason University opened the multimedia floodgates by inviting applicants to submit videos. While few admissions offices have followed suit and added a video solicitation, a sweep through YouTube shows videos, from existential mulling to absurdist displays of multitasking, being made for a wide swath of institutions. The incentive is clear for students who express themselves best via multimedia, and who isn’t looking for an edge?

Casey Myers ’97 came to Banner Elk as a student and has really never left. “It is because of Lees-McRae that my husband and I now live in Banner Elk with our two children and big dog! We met while I attended Lees-McRae, and after traveling for about six years after graduation, we decided to come back “home” to start our family.”

Lees-McRae is thrilled to announce construction has officially begun on the May School of Nursing and Allied Health. With the project scheduled to last for approximately one year, the College will be able to share updates with the campus community via the Shelco, Inc. Wendell Boggs is passionate about the importance of alumni giving back to Lees-McRae. “We got a deal by today’s standards. Tuition, Room/Board and Laundry was $600 per academic year, but in those days, our families had the same struggles coming up with the finances of sending us to college as families do today in sending their children to college. People helped us along the way and I think it is important for alumni to take their turn in supporting today’s students.”

Lees-McRae College is pleased to announce that there will be no tuition increase for academic year 2014-15. This is the second consecutive year the College has chosen not to increase tuition. With approximately 95% of Lees-McRae College students receiving some type of aid, the College remains committed to providing a quality, affordable education at the highest elevated campus in the eastern U.S.

Lees-McRae College will hold its opening Convocation ceremony on Thursday August 22 at 3:30 p.m. in the Broyhill Theatre of Hayes Auditorium. Opening Convocation is an important part of the academic tradition at Lees-McRae. Literally a 'coming together' of the College community, Opening Convocation celebrates the beginning of the academic year and welcomes new and returning students to campus. 2012 Lees-McRae College Athletic Hall of Fame inductee and Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Tanger Properties, Elder Manuel Jessup ’76 will give the keynote address, “Holding On To Your Vision.”
