On February 20 from 5 – 6 p.m., Lees-McRae’s King-Shivell Gallery will host a reception for the faculty art show, Across Borders. The featured faculty artists will be available to discuss their work. The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public. The exhibit will be on display until February 27.

For the second consecutive semester and the third consecutive spring semester, Lees-McRae College experienced significant enrollment growth. The overall enrollment for the spring semester has increased 10%, with a 77% increase in new student enrollment and a 6% increase in continuing student enrollment over spring 2014.

Lees-McRae College is proud to announce a new height of success for its Honors Program. At 84 students, the program is enjoying its largest enrollment to date, while also celebrating a persistence rate of 98.18% from fall 2014 to spring 2015. The program is growing at such a rate that program director Dr. Ken Craig is looking to increase its scope to 100 students by next fall. All of these accomplishments come just as the college gears up for its annual Scholars Day on February 21.

On February 28, 2015, for the first time in 12 years the college will host FAFSA Day in Carson Library on the campus of Lees-McRae from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. College financial aid officers and admissions specialists will assist students in completing the 2015-16 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This event is open to the community for students who plan to attend college in the 2015-2016 academic year.

Lees-McRae is proud to announce that on January 30, 2015, the North Carolina Board of Nursing (NCBON) approved the College to begin offering a pre-licensure nursing program. As the regulating body for the practice of nursing in North Carolina, NCBON approval marks a significant milestone in the progress of pre-licensure nursing at Lees-McRae.

Senior Emily Shields claimed the national title in the women's Division I cyclocross and the Lees-McRae cycling teams grabbed third overall in the Division I team omnium at the 2015 USA Cycling Collegiate Cyclocross Nationals in Austin, Texas.

Lees-McRae is proud to announce the Sam and Mary Hart Endowed Scholarship for Science, which will provide a full tuition scholarship to one student studying science or health sciences. This scholarship will be awarded to one undergraduate student every two years. Applications may be submitted until February 15, 2015.

The Division of Business Administration is proud to announce that Natalija Cakarevic ’14 recently completed a prestigious Summership with Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company in her home country of Serbia. The six-week internship involved on-the-job experience four days a week and intensive classroom instruction one day a week. Cakarevic was one of fifty-four applicants accepted out of 1,900.

Facing fierce competition in the collegiate marketplace, Lees-McRae College is pleased to report an overall enrollment for Fall 2014 of 941 students, up from 890 students in 2013. This marks a 6% enrollment growth for the second consecutive year. In addition to this growth, the college has also experienced an 11% increase in its retention rate in the last two years.

On October 2 and 3, the Lees-McRae Division of Creative and Fine Arts hosted students from Mitchell High School and Monroe High School. These students had an opportunity to explore campus, attend workshops and attend Lees-McRae’s performance of Cinderella: The Enchanted Edition. The day’s events were curated by Theatre Arts Education students and creative and fine art faculty.

After more than a year of construction, Lees-McRae will host the grand opening and dedication of the May School of Nursing and Health Sciences on Wednesday, October 8 at 11 a.m. The dedication ceremony and tours of the building are free and open to the public. Parking will be available in Hayes Parking Lot across from Hayes Auditorium. An invitation-only lunch for faculty, staff, donors, friends of the College and special guests will be held on Tate Lawn after the ceremony.

Lees-McRae College is proud to announce a record enrollment of 87 students in the Honors Program. These academically-gifted, highly-motivated students boast an impressive average GPA of 3.763 for seniors, 3.722 for juniors and 3.690 for sophomores.
“As of today, the overall average GPA for honors students [seniors, juniors and sophomores] is 3.725,” said Dr. Ken Craig, director of the honors program. “These are impressive numbers and these are impressive students.”

On Tuesday, September 9, U.S. News & World Report released their annual rankings of colleges and universities. In the 30th edition of this report, Lees-McRae was ranked among the best regional colleges – south. This year the College climbed 16 spots on the list for a tie with Bluefield College for 54th place. Regional colleges are defined as undergraduate-focused schools with diverse programs including business, education and nursing with fewer than half of degrees granted in the liberal arts.

On Thursday, July 17, more than 150 faculty, staff, alumni, donors and friends of Lees-McRae College gathered to celebrate the dedication of the Lauritsen Technical Theatre and Design Studio. The ceremony was followed by a luncheon and building tour. This building will primarily be used to build sets for use in productions by the College’s Performing Arts and the Summer Theatre programs.

The Elizabeth McRae Scholarship is the second largest scholarship awarded by Lees-McRae College, covering full tuition for a full-time student, renewable for four years.

We all know that Lees-McRae is an outdoor enthusiasts' dream, and now it's time to prove it! Beginning Tuesday, May 6, Blue Ridge Outdoors will host a Top Adventure College Tournament and we're in the running.
This contest will put Lees-McRae up against other colleges and universities in a head-to-head 32-school bracket. Large Division I schools will battle one side of the bracket while Lees-McRae battles against smaller schools on the other side. At the end of the contest, both division winners will compete for Top Adventure College glory.

On Thursday, April 10, Lees-McRae rolled up its sleeves and celebrated its 10th annual Mountain Day of Service. The day began with a kick-off in Evans Auditorium where participants received T-shirts and supplies. Throughout the day, groups spent time throughout campus working on projects such as painting, planting flowers, collecting recycling and giving the campus a good spring cleaning.

With winter weather in full force, head down to King-Shivell Gallery on the campus of Lees-McRae College to enjoy works by artist Dianne Cable. This exhibit will be on display throughout the month of February. The pieces are mostly assemblage, which is artwork that is made of found objects and can be three dimensional or two dimensional. The gallery will also feature an ongoing slide show of other works by Cable throughout her artistic career. This exhibit is free and open to the public.

Kerry Werner (Banner Elk, N.C./Lees-McRae College) successfully defending his title as the Division I men's national champion after he completed his six-lap race in 47:26. Werner, who won this national title for third time today, turned five of his six laps in under eight minutes.

On December 9, The College Database released its list of top colleges in the state for teacher education. Titled "Top Colleges in North Carolina: Shaping the Next Generation," the list highlighted post-secondary institutions in the state that produced the most education graduates during the 2012 school year. Lees-McRae was ranked no. 26 out of 42 schools that made the list.

In December 2013, Lees-McRae College named Boderick “Bo” Bennett as Vice President of Extended Campus and Online Learning. Bennett was most recently the program coordinator for Human Services at Lees-McRae as well as an adjunct professor for the criminal justice program. He will begin his duties on January 6, 2014.

Lees-McRae College has been awarded the annual Alan Sharp Award for Conference Carolinas, marking the first time in the school’s history. For the 2011-12 academic year 93% of scholarship athletes graduated within six years of coming onto the Lees-McRae campus.

While few admissions offices have followed suit and added a video solicitation, a sweep through YouTube shows videos, from existential mulling to absurdist displays of multitasking, being made for a wide swath of institutions. Wendell Boggs is passionate about the importance of alumni giving back to Lees-McRae. “We got a deal by today’s standards. Tuition, Room/Board and Laundry was $600 per academic year, but in those days, our families had the same struggles coming up with the finances of sending us to college as families do today in sending their children to college. People helped us along the way and I think it is important for alumni to take their turn in supporting today’s students.”
