Lees-McRae College senior Charlie Herron submitted a program proposal and was accepted as a presenter for the 2010 LEAD/WHOLE Conference, which took place Saturday, February 20th at NC Central University in Durham, NC.
The conference she attended was a marriage of two organizations' conferences, LEAD (Learn, Explore, Accomplish, Discover) and WHOLE (Women Heightening Opportunities for Leadership and Empowerment). LEAD is an annual student leadership conference sponsored by the North Carolina College Personnel Association and is geared toward current and rising student leaders. WHOLE is also an annual conference that is centered on the whole woman, with a mission to create unity among all African-American females, promote self-worth, self-esteem, responsibility, importance of an education, and provision of community service.
The program that Charlie presented-"It's your density! I mean"your destiny!"-was a session that provided an opportunity for students and community members to converse with each other on how women can find it within themselves to build leadership skills and rise above engrained ideas about women to ultimately reach their destiny as strong female leaders. In the workshop, participants also talked about how strong female leaders can use empowerment to engage women in their surrounding and global communities to raise awareness of women's situations locally and globally.
Charlie Herron frequently represents Lees-McRae at various leadership conferences and serves as a leader within her sorority, DOT, the Bonner Leader Program, and with each and every one of her endeavors. She is from Salisbury, NC, and is a double major in wildlife biology and sociology.
