President Barry M. Buxton is pleased to announce the addition of four new Ford E-350 Super Duty 14-passenger mini buses and one SUV to the College's motor pool thanks to a generous gift from Trustee Dr. Ed Shelton '60/'95.
The new vehicles were purchased to replace the College's aging 15-passenger vans used to transport athletic teams and student groups. Because of safety concerns, the College was urged by its insurance provider to explore alternate vehicles for transporting students on off campus trips.
According to Ken Buchanan, vice president of finance and business affairs at Lees-McRae College, the main reason insurance companies no longer want to insure the 15-passenger vans for organizations is because they become top-heavy and are prone to rollovers when fully loaded or occupied.
"Many colleges and universities are moving in the same direction to ensure the safety of students on college-sponsored trips," said President Buxton. "We are so grateful to Dr. Shelton for his gift that allowed the purchase of the buses and SUV. As we continue to work to elevate the image of Lees-McRae College, these new College vehicles certainly present a better image for Lees-McRae while providing safe transportation for our students, faculty and staff."
