Talia Freeman had her heart set on attending a large university. But a last minute visit to the Lees-McRae campus changed all that. She says that when she walked on campus it was like something was telling her this was her path. And she has continued on that path ever since!
Thinking back to her time at LMC, Talia attributes a lot of her current success to her time spent here. “I think my involvement with the softball team and student government, combined with my studies enabled me to attain various skills with events and marketing. I adored all of my professors, as they were all very powerful professionals with real world experience. They empowered me and instilled a skill set that has proved success for me professionally.”
Her days at Lees-McRae were not all spent studying. She enjoyed lining the Tate Residence Hall with mattresses and jumping on each one, bus rides to softball games, soccer games, her friends coming to watch her play softball while sitting in a kiddie pool, bonfires at Homecoming and banana milkshakes from Wily’s.
Giving back to the College is something she feels strongly about as well. “Lees-McRae is a special place and I think it is important to give back in any amount. By giving back we can ensure that this place, that was once so special to us, will continue to be a home and learning center for others.”
Her advice for current students comes from the heart. “I would really cherish all of your moments at Lees-McRae College, as they are probably some of the most important times in your life. Additionally, I would continue to strive for greatness with your studies and community involvement, as it will only lead you to professional success. I would capitalize on the resources that LMC offers, as it will enable you to find your dream job (That is what it did for me!).”
Talia definitely lives what she speaks! She has been a loyal employee of Beech Mountain Resort since 2008, and currently serves as the Director of Marketing and Sales. She is passionate about the High Country and committed to the further development and marketing of its assets, while maintaining a cohesive community. She is also closely involved in her community. She is a coach for Girls on the Run and serves on the board of directors for the local chapter. She just won a National Marketing Award and spoke at the National Ski Area Association Convention. And, she is also going to be running in the Grandfather Marathon on July 13. You can tell Talia has a strong affinity for the mountains and outdoors, as well as Less-McRae!
