Jennie Harpold has been named director of the New Opportunity School for Women at Lees-McRae. Prior to assuming this position, Harpold worked with NOSW for five years as an instructor and career coach, making her a perfect choice to take over full leadership of the program. The 2014 Summer Session for NOSW at Lees-McRae is scheduled for July 6-26 and applications are now being accepted.
“As I assume the position of Director of the New Opportunity School for Women at Lees-McRae College,” said Harpold, “I look forward to the challenge of continuing the success of my predecessors. I am excited for the new experiences and personal challenges that will come with this position. The New Opportunity School offers both challenges and rewards as we look to the future. Please join me as we embark on this journey together.”
In 2005, Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, NC became home to the second New Opportunity School for Women. Originally founded in 1987 by Lees-McRae College alumna Jane Baucom Stephenson (‘57) in Berea, KY, this organization seeks to improve the educational, financial, and personal circumstances of low-income women in the Appalachian region. Each summer the program welcomes up to fourteen women for a three-week residential program that allows the women to explore career options, educational goals, and leadership development, and also participate in a self-esteem boosting curriculum. This program is offered at no cost to the participant.
Harpold brings more than twenty years of workforce and career and technology education expertise to the program. Her experience in working with Workforce Development, directing educational programs for community colleges in multiple states and her non-profit management skills will serve her well in her new position. She is a graduate of the College of William and Mary with a degree in Social Psychology.
