Get ready for a night at the theatre! The Lees-McRae Performing Arts Department is proud to present The Ash Girl, which will premiere in Hayes Auditorium on Thursday, November 21 at 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public.
“[The Ash Girl] is a dark yet comic rendition of the Cinderella story – the age-old rags to riches tale with a few twists,” said Anna Ward, director of The Ash Girl and a 1988 graduate of Lees-McRae who once performed on the college’s stage as a student. “This version [of the Cinderella story] is more adult and incorporates the Seven Deadly Sins as animal ‘monsters.’ We have an amazing cast and crew, and this production should be one for the ages and a definite must-see for all who are able.”
The production details the life of Ashgirl who lives huddled deep in the protection of an ashy hearth. With her mother dead and her father away, she lives with her stepmother and two stepsisters. When the invitation to the ball arrives from the prince, Ashgirl finds the strength to go with the help of her friends. When she gets home, Ashgirl realizes that in order to regain the fleeting happiness she found in the arms of the prince, she must fight the monsters who have slithered and insinuated their way into her heart and mind. She must believe in herself for others to do so.
The Ash Girl is scheduled for November 21, 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m. with a final matinee on November 24 at 2 p.m.
All performances will be in Broyhill Theatre in Hayes Auditorium. Tickets are free for all Lees-McRae Students, Faculty and Staff. Non-Lees-McRae Adult tickets are $12 and Non-Lees-McRae Student/Child tickets are $5. Seating is general admission only, no reserved seating, and tickets are only sold at the door.
