In this edition of our alumni spotlight we introduce one of our newest members of the alumni association, Veronica Brinkman, Class of 2014!
Veronica’s time at Lees-McRae left her with several favorite memories. Two of her favorites would have to be when she went on a back packing trip with Dee Thomas, director of outdoor programs, and when she went to Belize with Dr. Skeate. Brinkman shared, “On the back packing trip with Dee, we were able to do a 200 foot rappel at Table Rock. Half way down the rappel, I stopped to look out at the view, and I saw the most amazing combination of rolling mountains and fall color on the trees. It was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. On my Belize trip, we ended up visiting a place called the Blue Pool. It was located on a pristine river and the natural minerals in the water had turned it blue. After swimming around in the clear blue water for a little bit, I climbed out onto the roots of a nearby tree. To my surprise, I learned that I was standing right underneath a family of Howler Monkeys. It was a spectacular feeling, and it was definitely not one that everyone gets to encounter.”
She definitely feels she can attribute some of her success to her time at Lees-McRae. “I have learned so much by being at Lees-McRae, and I feel that I have truly become my own person here. My experience has taught me much about the career field I am going to be pursuing, and I cannot wait to start the journey.”
Her advice for current students is “Don’t take your time at Lees-McRae for granted! This school has so much more to offer students then they realize. Definitely use every chance you can to get involved with campus life such as Outdoor Programs and the many SGA events that happen throughout the year. Take advantage of every opportunity you have while you still can, because four years goes by a lot quicker than you think.”
Veronica feels it is important to give back to Lees-McRae. “Hopefully by giving back to LMC we can further improve the experience for the students that come after us. I hope that future students are still able to have the opportunities that I have had (i.e. outdoor programs trips and an excellent wildlife biology education).”
Veronica graduated from Lees-McRae on Saturday, May 10, 2014! She will start a summer job at the US National Whitewater Center. After she has saved up enough money, Veronica plans to travel to new places and start her career as a Wildlife Conservationist.
