On Wednesday, August 31, the Lees-McRae Performing Arts department will partner with dancers Sandi Solomon and Tony Luis to present “The Joys of Partner Dancing,” a lecture, dance exhibit and opportunity to learn. The event will be held from 4 – 5:20 p.m. in the dance studio located in the Performing Arts Building.

To wrap up the 2016 season, the cast and crew of Lees-McRae Summer Theater will present The Pajama Game. Based on the novel “7½ cents” by Richard Bissell, the production will be performed August 2 and 4–5 at 7 p.m. and August 3–4 and 6–7 at 2 p.m.

Lees-McRae is kicking off the 31st Summer Theatre season with Disney and Cameron Mackintosh's Mary Poppins, which runs from June 26-July 3. Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, the show delighted Broadway audiences for more than 2,500 performances and received nominations for nine Olivier and seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The shows will take place in the Hayes Auditorium of Broyhill Theatre.

Lees-McRae College’s Department of Performing Arts continues the Fall 2015 performance series with Terra Nova. The drama, written by playwright Ted Tally, is the story of Englishman Robert Falcon Scott’s ill-fated Antarctic expedition in 1912 as his five-man team endeavors to be the first to reach the South Pole. This journey is filled with intense moments of hope to be the first to discover this foreign place, but also of fear, determination, isolation and tragedy.

Lees-McRae College has launched a $250,000 fundraising campaign for the renovations of Hayes Auditorium. The auditorium, built in 1975, is located at the front of campus on Highway 194 and serves as an important campus and community venue.

Kicking off the Lees-McRae Summer Theatre season from June 26 – July 3, Oliver!, a beloved musical based on Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, has won numerous awards including the Tony for Best Musical and Academy Award for Best Picture. Set in the 19th century, Dickens makes important social statements about the conditions of poverty in London, yet does it with comedy, empathy and the ever-present sense of hope.

Lees-McRae performing arts students will present Brunch: The Musical, an original rock musical by New York City-based actor and playwright Rick Kunzi, in a never before seen version of the show. Director and designer Ethan Henry ’15, in conjunction with Lees-McRae students, will perform the show on April 11 – 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Broyhill Theatre of Hayes Auditorium on the campus of Lees-McRae College. Seating is general admission and entry is free.

Lees-McRae performing arts students and faculty recently participated in the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) held in Chattanooga during early March. Of the ten students in attendance, seven scored an audition, interview or made promising contacts for future employment.

When the Lees-McRae Performing Arts Department presented Cinderella: The Enchanted Edition, most patrons awaited the ending reunion of Cinderella and her Prince Charming, but little did they know there was an equally special moment coming sooner. Faculty members Dr. Michael Hannah and Mindi Bishop collaborated with Lees-McRae senior Ethan Henry to put a new spin on Cinderella’s transformation from peasant to princess. Together, they created a one-of-a-kind dress that allowed Cinderella, played by senior Anna Ashburn, to instantly change costumes while on stage.

On October 2 and 3, the Lees-McRae Division of Creative and Fine Arts hosted students from Mitchell High School and Monroe High School. These students had an opportunity to explore campus, attend workshops and attend Lees-McRae’s performance of Cinderella: The Enchanted Edition. The day’s events were curated by Theatre Arts Education students and creative and fine art faculty.

The Department will present Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella: The Enchanted Edition and Craig Lucas’ Reckless. Both shows will be held in Hayes Auditorium at Lees-McRae College. Cinderella will performed October 2-5, and Reckless will performed November 20-23. Tickets go on sale one hour before the performance and are $12 for adults, $5 for children, and free for Lees-McRae students, faculty and staff. All seating is general admission.

On Thursday, July 17, more than 150 faculty, staff, alumni, donors and friends of Lees-McRae College gathered to celebrate the dedication of the Lauritsen Technical Theatre and Design Studio. The ceremony was followed by a luncheon and building tour. This building will primarily be used to build sets for use in productions by the College’s Performing Arts and the Summer Theatre programs.

As part of the Performing Arts curriculum, Lees-McRae students visited three local elementary schools to perform Alice in Wonderland. On Thursday, April 10, Katelyn Dancy, Katie Gesell, Destini Fleming, Adrienne Reece and Schuyler Carson performed two shows at Newland Elementary School for kindergarten through fifth grade children. Then on Tuesday, April 15, Laren Evans, Holly Knowles, Anna Ashburn, Chloe Boggs and Randi Sowards performed shows at Banner Elk Elementary School for pre-kindergarten through third grade children and Crossnore Elementary School for kindergarten through third grade children.

On Friday, February 14, Lees-McRae will host The Vagina Monologues at 7 p.m. in Evans Auditorium in the Cannon Student Center. This performance contains mature subject matter and is open to the public. Donations of at least one dollar are required and proceeds will benefit OASIS of Avery County. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Lees-McRae broke ground last month on its newest addition, the two-story Lauritsen Technical Theatre and Design Studio. With construction on schedule, the building is anticipated to be complete in time for the much anticipated 2014 season of Summer Theatre.
