Service and Travel Opportunities

There are more options after college than getting a job or going on to graduate school. In the last decade more students have availed themselves of travel opportunities, service opportunities or even military service as their path. Here is some information about each option and web sites for more information.

Military Service

Since the attacks of September 11, 2001 a lot of young people have felt it their duty to serve their country by enlisting in a branch of the armed services. Although a lot of students who graduate from college do not consider it an option, there are some great benefits including global travel, earning money for graduate school and, in many cases, after basic training, you automatically become an officer. Below are the links to the branches of the armed services. You may also find local recruiters in the telephone book under U.S. Government.

Service Opportunities

National service has become a very attractive option for young people graduating from high school and college who are not quite sure what they want to do in life but want to help their fellow man. There are programs sponsored by the U.S. Government and government/private partnerships that will help you setup and successfully complete a service opportunity. Service opportunities are available both in the United States and many overseas locations as well. The list of web sites should provide you with a great place to start exploring your own service opportunity.

Foreign Travel

So you want to see the world, but you don’t want to join the military. There are opportunities out there that will allow you to travel the world on someone else’s dime. Keep in mind that there are different kinds of foreign travel jobs. There are these where you act as a courier for the government or a company. These travel opportunities will not allow you to visit the country’s you’re flying to, take in the culture or see the sites. In most of these cases you will fly into an airport, hand over your documents to a waiting agent, receive a new assignment and board another plane.

Then there are those jobs such as travel writer or tour director where you explore new areas and develop new tour opportunities for travelers wanted to explore exotic locations. You become an expert on an area and advise clients about passports, vaccinations, local customs, duties, taxes, government regulations and all of the other aspects of that location.

The following are just a few websites offering foreign travel opportunities.
