Outdoor Adventure Studies Minor

Outdoor Adventure Studies at Lees-McRae College, Banner Elk, NC.

The mission of the Outdoor Adventure Studies minor is to provide students with an academic degree option that complements the existing academic majors and provides students the opportunity to experience a program of study reflective of the unique Appalachian mountain environment surrounding the college. The courses offered in the minor will prepare students for jobs in the fields of outdoor adventure education, adventure recreation and tourism, as well as for potential jobs with the National Park Service and the National Forest Service.


Program Goals & Objectives

  • To encourage students to be active participants in the beautiful mountain environment around them inspiring a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors with a personal commitment to take a leadership role in protecting as well as enjoying our wild places.
  • To offer students opportunities to learn the skills and gain the certifications necessary to pursue a career in one the many fields of outdoor adventure.
  • To provide students the opportunity to meet local professionals in the business of outdoor adventure education and adventure recreation and tourism.
  • To engage students in service learning and leadership development opportunities as they gain “hands-on” experience while volunteering with local organizations in the field.
