Outdoor Programs

The Office of Outdoor Programs offers you the opportunity to participate in outdoor educational experiences. You will be educated on essential leadership skills and challenged to be an active participant in your environment and in your own life.

The backcountry service learning experiences offer you the opportunity to perform trail maintenance work, improve rock climbing areas and really give of yourself by donating your time and energy to help ensure a quality wilderness environment for future generations to enjoy.

All Lees-McRae College rock climbing, hiking and backpacking programs taking place on National Forest Service Lands are authorized under a Special Use Permit by the Pisgah National Forest.

Service Learning

Adaptive Skiing

Volunteers from Lees-McRae College participate in the Annual DSUSA Adaptive Learn to Ski event at Beech Mountain Resort. Students, staff and alumni assist instructors and volunteer with many of the lessons for the more than 70 individuals with disabilities as they learn to ski and snowboard.

The Adaptive Learn to Ski Clinic at the Beech Mountain Ski Resort is the oldest clinic, being the first among many national clinics started by the DSUSA, otherwise known in history as National Handicap Sports.

LMC Kids Climbing Team

This service learning club offers students the opportunity to practice their leadership skills as they coach and teach the sport of indoor rock climbing to a group of local kids. The kids practice with their coaches once a week during the spring and fall semesters at the Lees-McRae College rock climbing wall located in the Arthur Student Recreation Complex. The students complete each season by competing in a local rock climbing competition.
