I have published six books and many newspaper and magazine articles on Appalachian people, places, ways, and nature illustrated with my photographs.

I have made scholarly presentations at the Appalachian Studies Conference many times, and maintain interests in mountain literature, folkways, music, nature, and agriculture.

Institutional Service and Responsibilities

I am the program coordinator of the English program and I direct the Stephenson Center for Appalachia at Lees-McRae College.

Personal Interests

I live on a farm in Mitchell County with my wife, Pam. We have horses, chickens, dogs, and cats, as well as assorted wild animals that wander through. We raise a garden and gather firewood using work horses. I enjoy hiking and photographing the mountain forests.
