Scholarly and Professional Achievements

Ms. Smith earned a M.A. degree in Physical Education with an emphasis in Athletic Training from Appalachian State & a B.S. in Physical Education with minors in Biology & English from UNC Greensboro. She is a Certified Athletic Trainer and is licensed by the state of North Carolina. She is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association, Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers' Association and North Carolina Athletic Trainers' Association.

Institutional Service and Responsibilities

Ms. Smith is the program director of the Athletic Training Education program, Athletic Training  Clinic Supervisor, and Senior Woman Administrator for Athletics. During her tenure at Lees-McRae College, Ms. Smith has developed an accredited Athletic Training Education program and initiated and developed a quality health care program for student athletes in the Intercollegiate Athletic program. She is the former chair of the divisions of Sport and Wellness and Nursing and Health Sciences. Additionally, Ms. Smith has worked in Residence Life, is a former assistant coach for women’s tennis and basketball and has served as athletic trainer for collegiate programs, summer sports camps and numerous special events such as NCAA Championships and the Special Olympics World Games. Institutional Service includes serving on the Executive Committee of Faculty Senate, Promotion Contact and Conversion Committee and search committees for academics and athletics. She is the faculty advisor for Club of Athletic Training and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. Beyond Lees-McRae, Ms. Rita serves on the Senior Woman Administrators' Committee of the Conference Carolina Athletics Conference and has served on the Conference Executive Committee. In the community, she serves on the Healthy Carolinians of Avery County Board.

Personal Interests

Ms. Rita likes living and working in the mountains. She enjoys reading mystery novels, attending cultural events and watching sports. Engaging in yard work and other domestic projects is always fun and relaxing for Ms. Rita. She is an advocate for animals and the environment. Enjoying a round of golf on a beautiful day with good friends is one of her favorite activities.
