Want to know which tomatoes are ripe for your Fourth of July picnic or how to prepare the perfect veggies and chicken? Come to the farmers market at Lees-McRae and ask a farmer! You can visit the market every Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tate Lawn on Main Street in Banner Elk. A few of the farms in attendance are Sugar Bear Farm, Bee Hopper Farm, Oak Moon Farm and Creamery, and Trosly Farm, along with more returning and first time vendors!
This year at the market you will find homemade jams and jellies, an array of nutritious salad greens, farm fresh eggs, shitake mushrooms, artisan baked breads, local honey, maple syrup, goat cheese, farm-raised chicken, duck, pork, fresh garden vegetables, irresistible baked sweets and chocolates, and much more.
“Shopping at local farmers markets adds a level of transparency to food systems, supports local and small farms, and provides great tasting and high quality food for your family while bringing stability to the local economy,” says NC Cooperative Extension Agent Adam Keener. “Supporting local farmers markets can be a way for us all to make real and significant change to our economy and food system.”
Make sure to visit the farmers market in Banner Elk on the campus of Lees-McRae College to buy fresh and local food every Thursday.
