The newly formed Lees-McRae Sorority, Delta Omicron Theta: Sullivanian Chapter, volunteered Sunday, February 11, at the Banner Elk Presbyterian Church for the children’s Valentine’s Day Party. The afternoon was filled with Valentine’s Day crafts, games and snacks that the sisters and children enjoyed together.
Delta Omicron Theta is based on a historic society that was once at Lees-McRae College named the Sullivanian Society. This society began in 1937 and was active until 1989. The Sullivanian Society was a group of women leaders and voices of Less-McRae College and prided itself on the qualities of strength, morality and responsibility that made each member an exemplary role model at Lees-McRae College.
In hopes of reigniting the spirit of sisterhood on campus, the founding sisters created Delta Omicron Theta: Sullivanian Chapter, in the fall of 2006. The founding sisters, with help from their brother fraternity, Beta Omega Kappa, set to work modernizing their constitution and expectations in hopes of bringing in a strong class for 2007. Delta Omicron Theta began their rush process at the beginning of February with 25 interested ladies.
“I have always wanted to have Greek Life on campus because I think it can really bring a lot to the school and surrounding community,” said Dani Usedom, president of the sorority. “This is just one more addition to our school that will interest current and prospective students. I can’t wait to come back in 10 years and see Delta Omicron Theta thriving with dynamic and wonderful ladies like we have now.
“The sisters of Delta Omicron Theta and I want to make a difference here from community involvement to heightening school spirit. We want to follow along the school’s motto, ‘In, of and for the mountains.’ It is time for the students to start giving back to Lees-McRae and the high country, and we are ready to do it,” Dani continued.
Delta Omicron Theta was established for the purpose of developing leadership and maintaining a high order of womanhood through fellowship and service. This sorority is dedicated to providing a caring and nurturing environment that inspires a deep and lasting bond between all sisters and the Lees-McRae community.
Members of the sorority will develop leadership skills and a strong sense of community through service projects and social gatherings. These experiences will encourage positive self-growth and the developement of each sister into a strong woman and contributing member of society.
“It is a privilege to serve as the advisor of Delta Omicron Theta. The founding sisters of this organization have spent countless hours of work and truly poured their hearts into this organization. They have laid a solid beginning foundation for the organization,” said Julie Lawson, Director of Student Life and advisor to the group. “I am excited to see what future holds for this group of amazing women.”
