TRUCKEE, Calif. — Erica Zaveta (Erwinna, Pa.) placed second in the Women’s Division I Individual Omnium to lead the Lees-McRae College cycling team to a third-place finish in the Team Omnium at the 2010 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships Sunday. Zaveta and Ben Hulse (Mooresville, N.C.) each captured an individual national title over the weekend for the Bobcats.
Hulse captured the Men’s Division I 4X crown on Saturday, and Zaveta won the Women’s Division I cross country event on Friday. She followed the win by placing second in the short track competition on Saturday, and rounded out the weekend with a 13th-place finish in Sunday’s downhill race to clinch second in the overall individual omnium standings.
In Sunday’s competition, Hannah Trimble (Spring, Texas) posted her second top 10 performance in as many races, finishing second in the Women’s Division I downhill race. Kerry Werner (Birdsboro, Pa.) capped a solid weekend with a top-40 finish in the downhill, securing a spot on the podium with a fifth-place showing in the Men’s Division I individual omnium.
Hulse paced the Bobcat men on Sunday with a 23rd-place finish in the downhill, while Eric Bercume (Barre, Mass.), and Werner finished 25th and 37th, respectively. PJ Noto (Marlboro, N.Y.) placed 55th in the race to round out the Bobcat riders in the event.
Zaveta turned in the top individual performance of the weekend for the Bobcats, posted a pair of top-five finishes (including the win in Friday’s cross country race), and capping the three-day event with a top-15 showing in the downhill. In all, the Bobcats tallied two individual national championships, six top five finishes, and nine top 10 showings.
Lees-McRae returns to the course on October 30 and 31 at the King College Cyclo-cross in Bristol, Tenn.
