Pet Therapy -
The McRae Cats
Florence Nightingale once
said that a small
pet animal is often an
excellent companion
for the sick (Notes on Nursing,
1860). Here
at Lees-McRae, we believe that animals are
also excellent companions for the homesick.
That's where the McRae Cats come in:
These two cuddly
critters, Esmeralda and
Puss-in-Boots (affectionally known
as Esmee and Possum) live at the McRae House, where they
provide companionship, company and entertainment for
visitors.
Studies have shown that
interacting with an animal can have numerous benefits,
including:
-
an induced state of relaxation*,
-
a measurable decrease in blood
pressure*,
-
improved general health**,
-
and among college students, a
lower incidence of depression***.
So, whether you would like to come by and cuddle with the sweet
Esmeralda or play with the energetic Puss-in-Boots, stop by the McRae
House and enjoy some pet therapy!

The Peace Garden
The newest addition to the McRae House is
the Peace Garden. Here you can take a few moments out of your busy
schedule to relax in the beauty of nature, watch the birds and squirrels
that live here, and enjoy some peace and meditation.
The Peace
Garden was created to give the Lees-McRae community a place to relax,
meditate and enjoy a time of peace and tranquility, outside of all the
stresses of college life. You can even plant flowers, pick berries
and help create and maintain this beautiful space. Contact
Susan
Shuford or
Kathy
Campbell to volunteer.
A New Outdoor Classroom is planned for
Fall 2006. Contact
Kathy
Campbell to reserve time in the outdoor classroom.

Soup Lunch
Every Wednesday throughout the
semester, the McRae house hosts a weekly Soup Lunch. This is a
chance for the entire Lees-McRae campus (including students, faculty
and staff) to come together and establish a true sense of community.
We believe that it is important for all the members of our
campus to
come together outside of the classroom, to create friendships, and
to strengthen the bonds that form the Lees-McRae community.
Come by and join us for the Soup Lunch, every Wednesday from 11:30
a.m. until 1:30 p.m.!
