Alumnus of the Month: Aaron Linville ’10

November 17, 2014

Like many alums, Aaron Linville ’10 finds it difficult to decide which memories from Lees-McRae College are his favorites. “They range from rock climbing with my roommates and leading trips for other students through Outdoor Programs, to volunteering at the blood drives and other service activities as part of the Bonner Leader Program. One particular memory I will always remember fondly is turning 21 during an alternative spring break to the Grand Canyon. The day before, we helped the National Park Service do some maintenance and went rappelling and climbing in the Canyon. The next day, we hiked from the rim of the Grand Canyon, down to the Colorado River, back up to the rim of the Canyon (20 miles round trip, and one mile drop and gain in elevation), and then celebrated my 21st birthday that evening. It was the best possible way to celebrate.”

Since he graduated in 2010, most of his work has been teaching church history and theology. “There is no doubt in my mind that the degrees I earned at LMC in History and Religious Studies contribute to my current success. The work I put into those degrees established a good foundation for what was to come after I graduated from LMC.”

Part of what made his years at Lees-McRae so enjoyable was the time he spent volunteering with community organizations and events.  His advice to current students?  “Make volunteering a part of your life, not just at LMC, but wherever life takes you afterwards. Find a cause you are passionate about, and then volunteer to make your dreams for that cause a reality. Also, take every opportunity you can to travel while you are at LMC. I was lucky to travel to Ireland, Germany, and Fiji in addition to other destinations during alternative spring/fall breaks, and those trips changed how I see the world. Lastly, do not forget to take a break and take care of yourself. There are only 24 hours in a day. Make sure you spend some of it taking care of yourself.”

He also feels it is important to give back to Lees-McRae.  “My experience at Lees-McRae was drastically improved because people I did not know cared enough about the College to support it, so that students like me could have life changing experiences. Many of my best experiences at Lees-McRae would not have been possible had gifts not been given to Outdoor Programs to purchase gear for student use. Without those gifts, my time at LMC would have been very different.”

After graduation in 2010, Aaron went on to get a Master of Divinity from Moravian Theological Seminary and he married in 2013. “I was ordained in October of 2014 and I am now the pastor at Rural Hall Moravian Church in Rural Hall, N.C. I thank the staff, faculty and donors who made my time at Lees-McRae a wonderful, memorable and meaningful experience.”
