Lees-McRae Enactus Team travels to S&D Coffee in Concord, N.C.

February 05, 2014

On Monday, January 13, six members of the Lees-McRae Enactus Team, along with Enactus advisor Amy Taylor and faculty member Joe Walsh, traveled to S & D Coffee in Concord, North Carolina. The day included a tour of the facilities as well as a presentation on the production and development of its products.

A nationwide supplier of beverages and ingredients, S&D Coffee boasts tens of thousands of customers, mostly in commercial businesses. The company offered the students a tour of the roasting, grinding, and packaging facility, and provided an in depth presentation on the production of coffee including the development of the bean at the origin country.

The students and faculty were given an incredible opportunity to discuss packaging, production, supply chain and sustainability, among other topics, with key leaders. They were also able to observe the entire grading process, which was an enlightening part of the experience for the students. There was even time to taste several coffee blends and teas, which, of course, best explains the product.

The Enactus Team at Lees-McRae, which was initiated by the Division of Business Administration, is one of many teams throughout the country that strive to create a community of student, academic and business leaders who are “committed to using the power of entrepreneurial action to transform lives and shape a better more sustainable world.”

The attendees included students, Brian Jorgenson, Morgan Beirne, Ben Parker, Rachael Nobbs, Ali Cook, and Gus Perderson, as well as business administration faculty members, Amy Taylor and Joe Walsh.

“The Enactus Team provides an innovative way to develop students’ strategic and critical thinking skills by developing projects encompassing the Triple Bottom Line of ‘People, Profit, Planet,’” said Amy Taylor, Enactus advisor and interim chair of the Division of Business Administration. “We are providing a competitive advantage for our students by growing the Enactus Team on our campus.”

The Business Administration program at Lees-McRae prepares students to become responsible, productive leaders in today’s global business environment. In addition to providing a strong core business curriculum, students are offered the opportunity to choose concentrations in accounting, finance, international business, management, marketing and small business development.
