March 21, 2014

On March 18, Lees-McRae College President Barry M. Buxton was elected to serve on the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) Executive Committee.

“I have a deep respect for Dr. [Hope] Williams [President of NCICU] and the work of this great organization,” said President Buxton. “It is an honor to serve in this capacity.”

NCICU is comprised of the 36 nonprofit, private liberal arts, research and comprehensive colleges and universities across North Carolina. This organization represents its constituents on public policy issues with the state government and other educational entities in the state. NCICU is responsible for several other areas including managing of the Independent College Fund of North Carolina, coordinating NCICU Collaboration Initiative, providing research and programs, and supporting college access and college success programs.

President Buxton is in his fourth year of service to Lees-McRae College. At the beginning of his presidency in 2010, he introduced a revitalization plan which served as a blueprint to renew campus spirit, strengthen existing infrastructure, create new opportunities for students and ensure the institution’s financial sustainability. In 2013, the campus transitioned to a comprehensive strategic plan that includes a focused and enhanced institutional mission and six active institutional commitments.

Dr. Buxton came to Lees-McRae with more than 35 years of higher education administration experience having previously worked at institutions such as Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga. Dr. Buxton received his Bachelor of Science in History from Appalachian State University and, subsequently, earned his Master of Arts in Social Studies from there as well. He went on to earn a PhD in Education Administration from the University of Nebraska.
