BRWI Presents: An Extravaganza of Fur & Feathers

There is nothing that drives home the beauty of the wilderness as deeply as an encounter with one of its natural inhabitants. The Blue Ridge Wildlife Institute employs non-releasable native birds of prey, songbirds, and mammals as educational ambassadors who represent their wild-living counterparts. Each animal ambassador has been injured and can no longer survive in the wild, and is utilized to illustrate ecological concepts, human impacts and relationships; and the importance of wildlife rehabilitation in our world today.

Nina Fischesser, the Director of the BRWI, is licensed by the NC Wildlife Commission, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and she has been rehabilitating injured and orphaned wildlife since 1989. Previously, Nina served as an instructor for The North Carolina Outward Bound School, where she gained experience and training as both a leader and an educator. Since then, Nina has been conducting educational programs for schools, camps, civic, and religious groups, in the 18 county region of Western North Carolina for 8 years. Nina's passion for the wild creatures that we share this earth with inspires people to appreciate each species and their role in the chain of life.

The animals are trained to be in a classroom setting and are tethered to the handler when necessary to ensure the safety of the attendees (and animals). Each program is designed to be age appropriate for the group of students attending the presentation. When time permits, a question & answer session follows each presentation, to ensure the audience's understanding of the concepts addressed in the program.

Many topics are covered in the Fur & Feathers Presentation:

~ Predator and prey relationships.
~ Animal anatomy, adaptations, and the various stages of growth they go through.
~ Ecological niches and species specialization.
~ What they eat and how they find food.
~ What threats each species faces as they fight for survival in the wild.
~ What impacts humans have on wildlife.
~ What we as individuals can do to help wildlife.

Wildlife rehabilitation, care and upkeep of the animals is extremely costly, so to offset these expenses, The Blue Ridge Wildlife Institute has developed an educational outreach program. Because we are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization the cost for our educational programs is tax deductible. The Blue Ridge Wildlife Institute and its Animal Ambassadors are fully insured.

We will gladly come to your school, club meeting, group meeting, camp, scout group, or other organization meeting to do a Fur & Feathers Presentation!
