Sport Science Major

The Mission of Sport Science Program is to develop highly competent professionals to serve in sport associated leadership roles in related organizations, and to provide a basis of course work so that the students will be able to pursue a master’s degree. It is designed for those students that want to study the scientific principles of human performance, and then apply these concepts to leadership in sports.


Program Goals

  1. Sport Science candidates will obtain and apply discipline specific scientific and theoretical concepts critical to the development of health educated and physically educated individuals.
  2. Sport Science candidates have the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to effectively direct safe and developmentally appropriate motor skills, movement forms, sports, and physical activities.
  3. Sport Science candidates will have the knowledge skills, and dispositions to direct individuals towards a healthy lifestyle regarding fitness and nutrition, thus helping society prevent obesity.
  4. Sport Science candidates will demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and disposition to direct athletic events while providing a safe and fair environment.
  5. Sport Science candidates will develop a strong background in subject area based upon the National Association of Sport and Physical Education Standards.

Where to Begin

The Sport Science Program at Lees-McRae College contains a sequence of carefully designed courses, several of which are prerequisites for others. PED 121, and PED 272 are recommended early in the student’s progression of courses.
