The Division of Performing Arts
Scholarship Auditions
Auditions are NOT
required for enrollment into the Performing Arts Studies Program. They
ARE required for anyone who
wishes to be considered for a Performing Arts Scholarship.
This requirement applies to both majors and
minors within the Performing Arts Studies and/or Theatre Arts Education degree.
Requirements for auditions can be found following
the audition dates. Most audition days are held while student productions
are running.

Swing! The Musical - April 2-6
Audition Requirements
Movement:
• Everyone learns a pedestrian movement routine:
o No preparation required.
• If you consider yourself a dancer, or are interested in a Dance Emphasis you
may:
o Prepare at least two contrasting
styles of dance in a routine that does not exceed 5 minutes in
length.
o May use a CD or cassette as
accompaniment.
Singing:
• Everyone participates in a basic singing audition. As a group you will perform
a simple piece taught to you in the audition.
o No preparation required.
• If you consider yourself a singer, or are interested in a Musical Theatre
Emphasis, or consideration in the Highlanders performance group you will need
to:
o Prepare two contrasting songs
(ballad and up-tempo).
o An accompanist is provided to play
for you.
o You may perform each song in its
entirety but you are not required to do so.
Acting:
• Everyone participates in an acting audition. You may:
o Prepare two contrasting monologues
(serious and comedic); Each one should not exceed one minute.
o Choose to do a cold reading that
will be provided for you.
Technical or
Management:
• If you are interested in focusing your study upon management or
technical theatre, you should:
o Bring letters of recommendation
from teachers, designers, technicians, etc. with whom you have worked.
o A resume of your work.
o Any portfolio materials you would
like to share with us.
Additional Audition Information
If you
cannot be on campus for an on-site audition, we will accept a VHS, DVD, or
youtube.com audition. We can also arrange a special time for an audition if you
absolutely cannot attend one of these dates...but we prefer you attend one of
the scheduled audition times if at all possible! We encourage you to visit our
campus and see how wonderful life can be in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North
Carolina!
