Summer and
Smoke
By
Tennessee Williams
The Division of Performing Arts at Lees-McRae College is taking on a
challenge! The Division
will be producing Summer and Smoke, a Tennessee Williams
masterpiece October 31-Novemeber 4.
You’ve probably seen Tennessee Williams’ work before such as Cat on a
Hot Tin Roof and Street Car Named Desire, for which Williams
has won Pulitzer Prizes, or The Glass Menagerie
for which he won a New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best
New Play.
However, we believe that upon
leaving Hayes Auditorium you too will believe that Summer and Smoke
is Tennessee Williams most passionate play.
Lees-McRae senior faculty member, Dr. Janet Speer, is serving as the
director for this production.
When asked why she chose to put this show in the spotlight she
replied, “(I) had
students who were ready to deal with some complex acting challenges (and
I wanted) to explore the human condition, showing us that no
relationship is simple.”
The play
is set in town in the Deep South and the plot, centers around the
struggle to get the love you want, even if you never do.
Adrienne Bergeron plays Miss Alma, a woman who struggles
to create a connection with the man she has always loved – the handsome
son of the town’s respected doctor, John Buchanan Jr. played by Brandon
Samples. In the process, lives are changed forever in a way that none of
those involved could have predicted.
Additional
cast member are Lucy Geouge (Mrs. Winemiller), John Warrick (Rev.
Winemiller), Heather Leupold (Nellie), Angel Whigham (Rosa Gonzales),
Takema Howard (Mrs. Basset), Bruce Bradberry (Vernon), Tonya Patterson
(Rosemary), Nick Donchak (Dr. Buchanan) Charles Dagenhart (Roger Doremus),
Jake Sheffer (Mr. Gonzales), and Mason Weaver (Archie Kramer).
The
setting in Hayes Auditorium will take on a new twist by showcasing a
five foot tall Angel and a working fountain on stage. Speer says, “The
Angel becomes the theme of the play.
(It)
begins to take on all sorts of symbolic implications:
drinking from life, the coldness of the statue, drinking to cool
ardor and many more.” The
show will also feature a fireworks display and many additional symbolic
pieces throughout.
