Q1. How do I connect to the Internet on campus?
A. The Lees-McRae College network is setup to allow students to connect seamlessly to the Internet without any pre-configuration. For wired connections, plug in your computer to any network port, and open your browser. For wireless connections, simply detect and connect to the lmc network using your wireless-enabled laptop or desktop computer. More information can be found at the e-services section of the college website (www.eservices.lmc.edu).
Q2. Who do I contact for help with my computer?
A. The Student Technology Helpdesk. Call extension 7228 and leave a voicemail, or e-mail us at Helpdesk@lmc.edu. You can also drop by to see us in person. We are located in the Bowman Science building, across from the main computer lab (top floor).
Q3. Does Lees-McRae offer any deals on software?
A. Yes. We provide the Microsoft Office 2003 Professional suite for all on campus students. It is available for download from our e-services website (www.eservices.lmc.edu). While we don't offer any specific deals on antivirus software, we install and recommend the free "AVG" antivirus product. Use the downloads link above for more information.
Q4. I don't have my own computer. Where can I go to use one?
A. Lees-McRae College has several computer labs that are open for student use:
Bowman Science Main Computer Lab - 25 Windows Workstations
Chaffee Annex Mathematics Lab - 16 Windows / Linux Workstations
James H. Carson Library Labs - 4 downstairs, 12 upstairs (Windows)
Cannon Student Center (Wily's Snack Bar) - 4 Windows Workstations
Q5. What is the campus wireless network and how do I access it?
A. The campus wireless network name is "lmc" and can be accessed anywhere on the main campus (indoor and outdoors). Currently there is no username or password needed. Simply detect and connect to the network using your wireless-enabled laptop or desktop computer. More information can be found at the e-services section of the college website (www.eservices.lmc.edu)
Q6. What is Spyware and what can I do to prevent it from affecting my computer?
A. Spyware and Malware are programs that cause many different problems for your computer, such as popup ads, invasive software, and tracking programs. Spyware and Malware can usually be easily removed by using some reliable tools, such as Microsoft AntiSpyware, AdAware, and Spybot Search & Destroy. The best way to avoid spyware is to take care not to open unknown email attachments, and not go to disreputable websites. Q7. What type of computer should I buy?
A. The right computer for you will depend upon which processes your computer will need to perform. Think about which activities may interest you, and which features your computer may need, for example:

Intensive Graphics or Video Editing
We recommend the following minimum set of components for a standard student computer:
Windows XP or Mac OS X

Ethernet Card (Required for Desktops AND Laptops)
Wireless Card (Required for Laptops, Optional for Desktops)

Q8. How do I Access my Lees-McRae College E-Mail Account?
A. Your username and password were given to you at Orientation. If you do not know these details, please contact the Student Helpdesk at Extension 7228 on campus. If you know your username and password, simply visit this website: www.email.lmc.edu and enter your details when prompted.
Q9. How much can I store in my Lees-McRae College E-Mail Account?
A. All Lees-McRae College e-mail accounts are subject to the following quota limits:
0 - 55Mb = Allowed to send and receive messages
55Mb - 65Mb = Warning Message, but still allowed to send and receive messages
65 - 70Mb = Allowed to receive but not send any messages
70Mb + = Cannot receive or send any messages
