Vice President for Advancement

Lees-McRae College, located in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of northwestern North Carolina, seeks a knowledgeable, creative and energetic development leader to serve as its next Vice President for Advancement (VPA).

Established in 1900, the College is a four-year, co-educational and residential institution with a strong liberal arts core and an affiliation with the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. The College enrolls approximately 650 undergraduates on its beautiful 400-acre campus and another 250 at nearby extended campuses.

In recent years, under the leadership of its new President, Dr. David Bushman, Lees-McRae has made substantive advances and thoughtful plans in the areas of curricular and faculty development, resource development, campus master planning, student enrollment and quality, and community outreach.

Position Summary:  As the chief advancement officer for the College, the VPA reports directly to the President, works closely with the Board of Trustees, serves as a key member of the senior administrative team, and is responsible for leading a comprehensive advancement program with an ambitious agenda for expanding philanthropy. The VPA provides direction for all advancement programs, including major gifts; corporate, government and foundation grants; planned giving; annual giving; alumni relations; and communications.

The College is currently in the quiet phase of a comprehensive campaign, with momentum building toward a public launch. To date, over $20 million has been pledged toward the $30 million goal. The VPA will lead the institution through the execution of this campaign, while also playing an integral role in the strategic planning for the campaign to follow. By performing these roles well, the Vice President will have the opportunity to significantly influence the College’s future.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have proven leadership experience in strengthening development programs; planning and managing comprehensive campaigns; cultivating major donors; expanding donor bases; extending outreach programs to alumni, parents, students and friends; and enhancing communications. Additional qualifications include outstanding management skills; strong written and oral communication skills; and the ability to relate effectively to diverse constituencies in a mission-focused environment. A bachelor’s degree is required (advanced degree preferred), and significant and relevant experience in an educational or nonprofit institution is desired.

For more information, visit www.academic-search.com/search.html and www.lmc.edu.

Search Process:  Review of candidates will begin immediately and continue until a new VPA is appointed. Submissions received by April 14, 2008 will be assured full consideration. Applications should include a letter of interest that addresses directly the agenda for leadership outlined in the institutional profile (which may be found at www.academic-search.com/search.html), résumé or curriculum vitae, and an annotated list of five references (noting the relationship to the candidate and including contact information). Nominations and expressions of interest will be treated in confidence and should be sent (preferably in MS Word or PDF) to:
