Ireland
“Ireland is an island rich in
history, rich in culture, and rich in the arts.
Ireland is also an island that is split into two major political regions;
one an independent republic, the other still part of the United Kingdom.
Divided loyalties, conflict, and sorrow have characterized Ireland for
much of its storied history. The
United States is infused with Irish culture, literature, art, music, and the
Irish people themselves, who left Ireland, settled here, and enriched this
country with their gifts and diversity.
Throughout the Twentieth Century
and into the Twenty-first, Ireland has been plagued by the “Troubles”, a term
remarkable for its understatement, that describes the sectional, political, and
religious violence that seemed to
create an Irish identity that appeared, at times, capable of overshadowing the
vast outpouring of “things Irish” that has benefited Western Civilization from
time-out-of-mind. Ireland, however,
has heroically resisted the slide toward insurrection, violence, and chaos by
focusing on reconciliation and justice as a practical and achievable future.
The world at large, and people as individuals, can learn from the
tragedy, struggles, and challenges of the “Troubles” and the effort to find
lasting peace in a place where differences run as deep as history.
Lees-McRae is taking a rare and
cutting-edge opportunity to engage students in a study of Ireland from
historical, cultural, and social perspectives, to incorporate both classroom and
“on-the-ground” experiences to gain insights into the “Troubles,”
and more importantly, to start building foundations for potentially
world-changing understandings – hopefully involvements and commitments – that
could be of life-defining impact.”
