Pathways to Peace

Arun Gandhi

“The 20th century saw its fair share of religious and spiritual leaders who made their mark on history and culture.  During that tumultuous time, the world cried out for peace and equality and a few brave people such as Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King Jr., and Mohandas K. Gandhi led the way.  Gandhi’s grandson, Arun Gandhi, found a different path to enlightenment than his grandfather and ended up in the same place: encouraging the principles of honesty, integrity, social harmony, courage and hope.”

Pathways to Peace - Arun Ghandi - JE 008.jpg

The Global Community Centers second annual Global Community Week, titled “Pathways to Peace,” sponsored Arun Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson, as the keynote speaker.  Visiting us again, after packing Evans two nights in a row during that summer, was Dr. Steven Haynes, Professor of Religion, Rhodes College, and an author and expert in the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and in Jewish-Christian dialogue.  Bonhoeffer was a German theologian and pacifist who attempted to assassinate Hitler, was imprisoned and executed.  In his lecture Steve talked about lessons we can learn from the role of the German church during and after the holocaust. He also took part in the panel discussion with Arun Gandhi and Herb Walters.

Rounding off the three-member panel was Herb Walters. Herb is founder/director of the Listening Project. The Listening Project teaches rival factions across the world ways to sit down and have constructive dialogue with each other. With projects in such areas as South Africa, Croatia and Cambodia, as well as several in the United States, Herb has wide experience of facilitating peaceful dialogues.  Accompanying the week’s events was an art exhibit in King-Shivell Gallery featuring local artists and school children on the theme of Pathways to Peace.  The week officially opened with an Inter-faith service on Sunday night and a Teach-In Monday afternoon. To round off the week there was an International Unity Festival on Friday night to remind us how much fun diversity can be.  A day of service on Saturday, put our passion generated during the week into action.
