Honoring the mission of the college, the Global Community Center supports the development of our students into global citizens, who take responsibility for transforming their world.  To achieve this responsibility and empowerment, we blend information and education with opportunities to be of service.  Through our international service based trips (Global Partnerships), Campus Programming, and the support of various Student Organizations, the Center offers an educational adventure exploring the challenges our global community faces in the areas of peace, justice and the environment.

I was drawn to be a part of the Global Community Center because of my many travels around the world while I was in college. By the time I finished my Bachelor's degree I had traveled on four continents, seeing many beautiful and disturbing things. Through these travels I saw for myself how small and interconnected the world is. Building personal relationships with people around the planet was enthralling and exciting.  A wakeup call, to say the least.

The term “global community” reminds me that we are all neighbors. With ethnic groups, religions, nationalities and economies mixing like never before, we are called to explore and rethink our international neighborhood and get to know the neighbors we didn’t even know we had. In the past, our community problems with war, natural and man-made resources, and injustices were on such a small scale that, while being awful, they affected very few people. Today our problems have become worldwide and we need a vision and most importantly action that appropriately matches the challenge. My vision is that the Global Community Center continues to grow as a place that will support you as you explore your neighborhood and become a part of making it a safer and more joyful place for all to live.

Happy travels, both around the world and inside your heart.

Sincerely,

Robert Black

Global Community Center Director
