Your guide to tailgating at Homecoming 2019

Homecoming is all about traditions old and new, but one of the most classic and essential traditions by far is tailgating.

Lees-McRae will celebrate its annual Homecoming from Friday, Oct. 4 through Sunday, Oct. 6 with tailgating kicking off at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5 at Tate Field. Tailgate spaces are offered surrounding Tate Field for the soccer matches, field games, and fireworks display.

All members of the Bobcat family are invited to tailgate and cheer on our soccer teams.

In order to reserve your tailgating space it’s important that you register! When registration opens on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 3 p.m., visit lmc.edu/tailgate and click the “Tailgate Registration” button near the top of the page, you will see the list of available spaces. Just keep in mind—spaces are first come, first served.

Tip: If using a mobile device (phone, tablet, etc.) to register you will not be able to choose individual tailgate spaces. The spaces will be assigned by "best available" in each section. In order to choose a specific space, please use a laptop or desktop computer.

We want everyone to be able to enjoy the family-friendly event, so the cost to register for a tailgating spot is free!

Once you’ve registered and packed your bags for the mountains, it’s important to know where and when to go. Tailgating spaces will open at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5 with festivities kicking off at 1 p.m. Just keep in mind that tailgate attendees are not permitted in spaces prior to the event opening.

Tip: When you arrive to tailgate, make sure you bring your printed ticket to show event staff onsite!

Parking during the event will be available at the Dickerson Athletic Complex and the Grandfather Home for Children field off Hickory Nut Gap road (weather permitting). Parking will also be available in the Cannon Student Center, Hayes Auditorium, May School of Nursing and Health Sciences, and lower Chaffee lots. A five-minute unloading zone will be available near Bobcat Bank at Tate Field. Shuttles will run from 1–9 p.m. and depart from Tufts Tower and the Hayes lot on the main campus.

Here are some additional tips and frequently asked questions regarding tailgating:

  • What are the rules regarding alcohol consumption?
For Homecoming only, Lees-McRae College allows those of 21 years of age and older to consume alcoholic beverages in moderation while tailgating. Those consuming or in possession of alcohol must be able to present a valid form of I.D. (Unexpired state issued driver’s license, U.S. Military I.D., State of N.C. Special Identification Card, Official Passport). Spirits, kegs, and/or glass containers are not permitted in any location. This is a family-friendly event. Please consume wisely and be respectful of other attendees.

  • Can I bring my pet?
Pets are permitted at tailgate spaces. However, animals must be kept on a leash and all waste must be disposed of properly. Please use discretion; there will be large crowds and loud noises (music, fireworks, etc.) throughout the event.

  • Can I bring my grill?
Propane and charcoal grills are the only permissible sources of heat for cooking. Hot coals must be completely extinguished with water prior to leaving the tailgate space. Open flame fires, including fire pits, are not permitted.

  • Is electricity available?
Electricity is not provided. If you are in need of power, we recommend that you use your vehicle to power any audio or video equipment. AC converters can be purchased at most electronics stores. Generators are not permitted.

  • What do I need to do at the end of the tailgate event?
We are lucky to live in these beautiful mountains and we want them to stay pristine! Please take advantage of the recycling options and ensure that all trash is removed before you leave your space.
