Getting to know Melanie Hulbert, the new vice president for student affairs

If Melanie Hulbert could communicate one thing to campus, it would be that everyone belongs here.

The new vice president for student affairs has been passionate about understanding people and creating a more just society since double majoring in Sociology and Psychology for her bachelor's degree. One of her undergraduate professors fed her love of finding answers and sharing them with others, which encouraged Hulbert to pursue a career in higher education.

Hulbert has a master’s degree in Women and Public Policy and a doctorate in Sociology. Before coming to Lees-McRae, she was the associate vice president for academic affairs at Western Colorado University, where she also co-chaired the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Internationalization committee. She hopes to leverage her background and experience to continue furthering the college’s commitment to building a culture of excellence, where everyone feels welcome and included.

As the vice president, Hulbert plans to work closely with students and identify their wants and needs. Her door is always open.

She wants students to know that they are known and cared for. “This is a place that takes you as you are,” she said, “and it’s our job to meet you where you’re at. And ultimately, when you walk across that stage in four years, know that we are so proud of you and we want to thank you for letting us be a part of your journey.
