Lees-McRae remembers Martin Luther King Jr. with an evening of poetry, speeches, and songs

Join Lees-McRae in honoring the memory of Martin Luther King Jr. at the college’s annual commemoration program tomorrow, Jan. 20 at 8 p.m. in Hayes Auditorium.

“The Fierce Urgency of Now: An Experiential Evening to Remember the Life of Martin Luther King Jr.” is open to Lees-McRae students, faculty, and staff, as well as the community. At this year’s program attendees are encouraged to reflect on King’s legacy of promoting civil rights and combating racism.

The celebration of King’s life and legacy will feature music, poems, and recitations by individuals and groups associated with Lees-McRae. The evening includes slam poetry performances by the Creative Writing Club and songs performed by the college’s own choral group, The Highlanders.

Rev. Alan Yawn, pastor at Banner Elk Christian Fellowship Church, will deliver the keynote address. Chief Diversity Officer Charles Gibson III, President Lee King, and Student Government Association President London England will also share remarks.

Admission to “The Fierce Urgency of Now: An Experiential Evening to Remember the Life of Martin Luther King Jr.” is free to all attendees.
