Dianne Cable artwork exhibit to be on display in King-Shivell Gallery at Lees-McRae throughout February

February 17, 2014

With winter weather in full force, head down to King-Shivell Gallery on the campus of Lees-McRae College to enjoy works by artist Dianne Cable. This exhibit will be on display throughout the month of February. The pieces are mostly assemblage, which is artwork that is made of found objects and can be three dimensional or two dimensional. The gallery will also feature an ongoing slide show of other works by Cable throughout her artistic career. This exhibit is free and open to the public.

“Dianne Cable utilizes assemblage and mixed media in new and innovative ways,” said Jason Sabbides, assistant professor of Communication Arts and Design and manager of King-Shivell Gallery. “The main theme in her work are toys as the subject matter, which has not been seen at Lees-McRae College before. This is a great opportunity for the students and community to break the molds of traditional 2-D work and see how they can transform everyday items into pieces of fine art.”

Cable’s work has been shown both nationally and internationally. She is a retired art professor, having spent most of her teaching career, of both studio and art history, at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Cable also spent a significant amount of her professional time as an artist and teacher in Cortona, Italy, with the University of Georgia’s Studies Abroad program. Cable now lives and works in her studio/home in Spring Creek, NC.

The Communication Arts and Design program at Lees-McRae offers three concentrations, one of which is Art and Design. This concentration is designed for students interested in fine art techniques and 2-D design. Coursework within this concentration explores studio art and art history, which makes viewing the work of visiting artists a perfect addition to the work explored in the classroom.
