Get ready for a great night at the theatre! The Lees-McRae Performing Arts Department is proud to present the British production, She Stoops to Conquer, a classic comedy of errors that debuted in 1773. The production will premiere in Hayes Auditorium on the campus of Lees-McRae College on Thursday, February 26 at 7:30 p.m. and run through March 1. All performances are open to the public.

“Even though it’s an eighteenth century play, it has a surprisingly modern feel,” said Dr. Michael Hannah, director of She Stoops to Conquer and associate professor of performing arts, “and the characters are so very human that we can easily connect with them and see the humor and mistakes of the night.”

Written by Oliver Goldsmith, She Stoops to Conquer is one of the most often produced plays of its time. Mr. Hardcastle is hoping his daughter, Kate, will marry young Marlow, the son of his old friend, but the son gets so nervous around women of his own social class, he makes a fool of himself even trying to carry on a simple conversation. Kate’s mischievous step-brother, Tony, fools Marlow and his friend Hastings into thinking Hardcastle’s country house is an inn. Kate pretends to be a maid to draw Marlow out a little, and confusion reigns throughout the night.

Dr. Michael Hannah, director, also designed the production’s costumes, while Danielle Curtis, interim chair of the Division of Creative and Fine Arts designed the lighting and sets.

Performances will be held February 26, 27 and 28 at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee on March 1 at 2 p.m. All performances will be held in the Broyhill Theatre of Hayes Auditorium on the campus of Lees-McRae College. Adult tickets are $12 and Student/Child tickets are $5 including NC sales tax. Seating is general admission only, no reserved seating, and tickets are only sold at the door. The Box Office opens one hour before show time and can be reached at 828.898.8709.
