Poet Adrian Rice to read at Lees-McRae on January 28

January 14, 2016

If the novelty of winter has ebbed, come warm up with poet Adrian Rice’s reading at Lees-McRae College on Thursday, January 28 from 7 to 8 p.m. Rice will present his poems in Evans Auditorium of the Cannon Student Center as the first of the Stephenson Center for Appalachia’s 2016 Lecture Series.

Living in Hickory, North Carolina, Adrian Rice comes from Northern Ireland. He was born just north of Belfast and earned an MPhil in Anglo-Irish Literature from the University of Belfast.

The author of several volumes of poetry, Rice has received praise for The Clock Flower, The Mason’s Tongue and Hickory Haiku. “Rice’s voice is distinctively his own: forthright, colloquial, wry and persuasive,” writes Patricia Craig in the Times Literary Supplement.

Rice has delivered writing workshops, readings and lectures throughout the United Kingdom, Ireland and the Unites States. He has also joined fellow Belfastman and Hickory musician Alan Mearns to form “The Belfast Boys,” who perform traditional Irish music. Their cd Songs for Crying Out Loud was recently released.

“We are fortunate to have such a distinguished poet visit us,” said Dr. Michael Joslin, director of the Stephenson Center for Appalachia. “Not only does his work speak to present day Appalachia, but his Irish roots connect us to our forebears in a powerful way. We invite everyone to participate in the evening.”

The Stephenson Center for Appalachia’s programs are free and open to the public. For information, contact Dr. Michael Joslin at joslin@lmc.edu.
