Lees-McRae swim team leads lessons for elementary students at Greensboro Aquatics Center
When Hurricane Helene swept through Western North Carolina it caused devastation to the communities surrounding campus. As Banner Elk and Lees-McRae began the road to recovery, the college remained dedicated to fostering a positive college experience for the hundreds of students who had to be temporarily evacuated from their mountain home.
Lees-McRae partnered with other area colleges and universities to house athletics teams, allowing student-athletes to continue practicing, training, and competing in their seasons. The college’s swim team was one such athletic program that was temporarily relocated to Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina.
While this transition could have been difficult and tumultuous for these student-athletes, they chose instead to make the most out of the experience and took it as an opportunity to give back to a community that had opened its arms to them.
Throughout the time the swim team spent at Guilford College, they partnered with the Greensboro Aquatics Center to lead swimming lessons for groups of local elementary school students, an experience the student-athletes say they will carry with them forever.
