Auditions for Performing Arts fall productions begin Wednesday

August 14, 2017

Lees-McRae Performing Arts will open its stage for fall production auditions on Wednesday, August 16, at 6:30 p.m. in Hayes Auditorium.

Students, faculty, staff and the public alike can audition for parts in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank.

“We really wanted to have a show that aligns with the curriculum in schools,” Assistant Professor of Performing Arts, Gabriel Vanover said regarding And Then They Came for Me.

A unique theatrical performance, And Then They Came for Me features videotaped interviews with Holocaust survivors Ed Silverberg and Eva Schloss with live actors recreating scenes from their lives during World War II. Silverberg was Anne Frank's first boyfriend–writing about him in the beginning of her now-famous diary.

Tony nominated Broadway musical comedy, Spelling Bee centers on a fictional spelling bee set in a geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School.

Either those interested in being cast in both productions or only Spelling Bee should prepare a memorized, 90-second audition package that includes an up-tempo song and a contemporary monologue–no acapella auditions, a pianist will be provided.

Those only interested in being cast in And Then They Came for Me should prepare two memorized contemporary monologues, no longer than 90 seconds combined.

Callbacks will be Thursday, August 17, and Friday, August 18, for Spelling Bee and And Then They Came for Me, respectively.

Rehearsals for Spelling Bee will begin on Sunday, August 20, with performances September 28 through October 1.

Rehearsals for And Then They Came For Me will begin mid-October, with performances November 16–19.

Members of the public who wish to audition can contact Gabriel Vanover at vanoverg@lmc.edu or at 828.898.8836.
