“Shrek, The Musical” brings the swamp to the stage for Lees-McRae Summer Theatre

The beloved DreamWorks Animation film “Shrek” is coming to the Hayes Auditorium stage this summer as part of the 41st season of Lees-McRae Summer Theatre. “Shrek, The Musical,” directed by alumnus Jarrett W. Koski ’12, will run Thursday, June 11–Tuesday, June 16.

The Tony Award-winning show follows Shrek, an ogre who teams up with a talking donkey named Donkey and the feisty Princess Fiona who is determined to break out of her damsel in distress mold. The trio embarks on a life-changing journey, encountering dozens of other fairytale misfits along the way.

With elements from the original film as well as sequels “Shrek 2” and “Shrek Forever After,” “Shrek, The Musical” brings everything you love about the classic movie characters to the stage in a way you have never seen before.

“Directing ‘Shrek, The Musical’ is truly a dream come true. Ever since the show premiered on Broadway in 2008, I have hoped for the opportunity to bring my take on this hilarious, heartwarming story to life. The musical’s message of acceptance, friendship, and celebrating what makes us unique resonates deeply with audiences of all ages,” Koski said. “I am especially grateful to direct this production at my alma mater Lees-McRae, which makes this experience even more meaningful. Sharing this journey with such a talented cast and crew is an honor, and I cannot wait for audiences to experience the magic, laughter, and heart of ‘Shrek.’”

There will be three matinee performances of “Shrek, The Musical” at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 12; Saturday, June 13; and Sunday, June 14. There will also be three evening performances at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 11; Saturday, June 13; and Tuesday, June 16. Tickets for all performances are on sale now.
