Wilderness Medicine (minor)
The Wilderness Medicine minor is designed for students with a medical or emergency management career interest in the outdoors. This program seeks to train students for practice in low-resource environments such as backcountry guiding, search and rescue, and more.

This program is the only minor of its kind in the country.
You'll complete your Wilderness Emergency Medical Technical and other certifications right on our campus and at Beech Mountain Resort.
What You'll Study
The interdisciplinary program combines courses in Emergency Medical Services and Management and Outdoor Recreation Management with an emphasis on risk management and wilderness medicine.
Courses in the program include wilderness first responder, trauma emergencies, and EMS operations. You will be prepared to pursue an exciting career bringing medical assistance to those in the outdoors.
After completing this minor and passing all national exams, you will obtain your Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (WEMT) certification.
